Annual Message from the ASCE Norfolk Branch President

On behalf of the Norfolk Branch of the American Society of Engineers (ASCE) and the Norfolk Chapter of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI), I would like to thank you for your interest in our organization.

Founded in 1852, ASCE is the nation’s oldest engineering society. It represents more than 150,000 members in the civil engineering profession across 177 countries. The Virginia Section of ASCE started in 1922, and its objective has been to advance the profession of engineering in line with the goals of the global ASCE in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Norfolk Branch of the Virginia Section includes the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and Suffolk. The ASCE Norfolk Branch also includes the Norfolk Chapter of the Structural Engineering Institute, which focuses on the advancement of our members' careers, technological progress, and the improvement of the professional practice of structural engineering.

In this upcoming year, we are planning informative and engaging activities with a focus on the following:

Supporting our membership and recruiting new members to the Norfolk Branch

Increasing the quality and quantity of events with exciting speakers featuring timely topics, and hosting activities within our local water resources, environmental, geotechnical, structural, coastal, and transportation engineering communities

Enriching the professional development of our membership through programs that include student mentorship and networking in the diverse engineering community

Facilitating informative site visits to innovative projects and ASCE landmarks in the surrounding region that highlight interesting and significant engineering accomplishments

Increase participation in educational outreach events at our local schools and communities

ASCE Norfolk Branch strives to engage and empower the engineering community by providing opportunities for students, young professionals, and seasoned professionals in the many subdisciplines of civil engineering. We hold technical seminars, lunch and learns, social events, “hard hat” tours of local infrastructure and other opportunities to build and enrich the engineering network in the Hampton Roads community.

I am grateful to be serving this tight-knit community as the ASCE Norfolk Branch president. My goals this year are as follows:

Promote programs that increase engagement of students and young members

Personalize recruitment and Branch engagement by reaching out directly to engineering communities

Host a successful annual joint technical seminar in April 2025

Increase inter-organization collaboration with other ASCE branches and engineering societies in the region

Coordinate and host multiple lunch and learns to increase member engagement and professional development opportunities

Encourage and provide funding for our members to attend regional and national ASCE conferences

If you have any questions or would like to get involved, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with the information below. I encourage you to join us as we continue to serve the engineering community.

Thank you and hope to see you at our future events!

Sincerely,

Kayode C. Aransiola, PE, DCA, DBIA
